I’m working on a new project in which I will document memories of my Facebook friends. I plan to work on this project for a small chunk of time every day until I have illustrated all 297 of my current Facebook friends. Each friend will be illustrated on a 4” square piece of paper. The illustration will include their profile picture, their name, a memory and the time that the memory occurred. Each friend’s memory will be chosen from our first Wall Post conversation using the Facebook feature See Friendship.
I dreamt up this idea while considering ways I could force myself to make art every single day. After celebrating my birthday this weekend, I was reminded of how estranged friendships can lay dormant on Facebook all year, but then come to life for a chance to send happy birthday wishes. I spent some time digging around and soon realized how easy it would be to use Facebook as a way to compile this information for a project like this. I’m treating this project as an experiment, and I’m excited to see the ways it may evolve with time.
