Today I took a trip to Chinatown to discuss Young Audiences of Northern California arts programming with the folks at the Chinese Education Center. This school serves Chinese families who have very recently immigrated to America. Their students are learning English for the first time, and adjusting to a new way of life.
After speaking with the school’s Program Coordinator, I learned that many of the children in this school are coming from a Chinese education with little emphasis in the arts. By integrating the arts into their classroom there is the potential to reinforce English Language Arts while introducing these children to American culture. It gives me great pleasure to work with schools throughout the Bay Area in helping them use arts education as a tool in the classroom.
